Does size matter? Micronutrient intake and impact in lifestyle of patients with Parkinson’s disease

Objective:

Determine the relationship between micronutrient intake and lifestyle in patients with Parkinson Disease.

Methods:

Patients with idiopatic Parkinson’s disease were recruited from the outpatient movement disorders clinic.

Micronutrient intake was assessed through a 24-hour dietary reminder with the Nutrimind Software (NNS), for phosphorus (P), selenium (Se), Vitamin A (VA), vitamin K (VK), vitamin B3 (B3). Lifestyle was measured through the Lifestyle Profile Questionnaire (PEPS-I), that comprises six dimensions: nutrition (Nu), exercise (Ex), health responsability (HR), stress management (SM), interpersonal support (IS) and auto-update (AU), and a global lifestyle score (GLS). Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to contrast variables.

Results:

We analyzed 34 patients, 58% were male with a mean age of 63 ±11 years and mean disease duration of 6 ±5 years. We found an unhealthy lifestyle in 47% and the most affected dimensions being Nu (56%), and Ex (56%). The dimensions with a higher proportion of healthy lifestyle were AU (53%) and SM (56%) and the dimensions of IS and HR had 50% each.

Significant correlations were found between the global Lifestyle Score and intake of vitamin A (r=.449; p<0.008) and vitamin K (r=.343; p<0.04) and a negative correlation was observed with phosphorus (r=-.361; p<0.036) and selenium (r=-.359; p<0.037). Whereas by domain, nutrition was negatively correlated with intake of phosphorus (r=-.349; p<0.043) and selenium (r=-.384; p<0.025); stress mangament with phosphorus (r=- .381; p<0.026), selenium (r=-.344; p<0.04) and vitamin B3 (r=-.392; p<0.02); a positive correlation between auto-update and vitamin A (r=.484; p<0.004); and health responsibility with vitamin A (r< .408; <0.017) and vitamin K (r<.384; p<0.025).

Conclusion:

It is well proved that deficiencies in vitamin and mineral intake may affect the correct functioning of the body and promote disease progression. The role of the nutritionist in the clinical treatment of Parkinson’s disease patients is necessary.
